Toc is a French jazz-core trio founded in 2008, featuring Jérémie Ternoy on Fender Rhodes, Ivann Cruz on electric guitar, and Peter Orins on drums. Playing with density and raw physicality, daring trance states wrapped in joyful, gripping tension, Toc delivers an energetic form of improvised music. Noise, post-rock, psychedelia, experimental pop, kraut or hardcore jazz—trying to pin down this trio’s music is a lost cause, as they delight in blurring the lines and taking us exactly where we don’t expect to go.

As the title of one of their albums suggests, Toc never plays the same thing twice. They simply can’t help it, endlessly starting over again, never quite sure they won’t tinker with a few new habits picked up on their latest tours.

Not having entirely given up on belonging to the great family of the music industry, the three musicians continuously reinvent their hypnotic free-pop, seasoning their intoxicating, sun-drenched grooves with a hint of nagging kraut jazz-core, and churning out short-lived hits that sing—and are nonetheless highly addictive.

As their name might suggest, the members of Toc tend toward the obsessive, if not downright compulsive. Their frenzied, ritualized—yet thankfully non-contagious—behaviors escort the listener into a bubbling space-time continuum before bringing them gently (or not) back down to earth in a more or less unsettled state.

Devoted to excursions into the acoustic far North (Qeqertarsuatsiaat – 2015, The Theory Of Constraints – 2024) as well as the sticky heat of the bayou (Air Bump – 2016), and enriched by countless concerts, experiments, and encounters, Toc regularly returns with fervor to its electric, urban channel, never shying away from collaborations (Dave Rempis, Paulina Owczarek, Jean-Luc Guionnet, …).

Unclassifiable and contagious, Toc has stubbornly been messing with minds since 2008…

Jouant la densité et l’organique, osant la transe dans une tension joyeuse et accrocheuse, Toc propose une musique improvisée énergique. Noise, post-rock, psychédélique, pop expérimentale, kraut ou jazz hardcore, difficile de classer la musique de ce trio tant il brouille les pistes et tente de nous emmener là où on ne l’attend pas.

Comme le suggère le titre d’un de leurs albums, Toc ne joue jamais deux fois la même chose. Il ne peut pas faire autrement, ne peut s’empêcher de tout recommencer à chaque fois sans être sûr de ne pas triturer quelques nouvelles manies échappées de ses dernières tournées.

N’ayant pas renoncé à appartenir à la grande famille de l’industrie musicale, les trois musiciens réinventent continuellement leur free-pop hypnotique, relevant leur rythmique enivrante et solaire d’un soupçon de kraut jazz-core lancinant, produisant des succès sans lendemain qui chantent mais hautement addictifs…

Comme leur nom semble l’indiquer, les membres de Toc sont plutôt obsessionnels voire compulsifs. Leurs comportements frénétiques, ritualisés mais non contagieux accompagnent l’auditeur dans un espace-temps en effervescence avant de le ramener à la terre ferme dans un état plus ou moins trouble.

Adepte d’incursions dans le grand Nord acoustique (Qeqertarsuatsiaat – 2015, The Theory Of Constraints – 2024) et dans la moiteur du bayou (Air Bump – 2016), riche de ses nombreux concerts, expérimentations et rencontres, Toc revient régulièrement à son canal électrique et urbain avec ferveur, et ne rechigne aucunement aux collaborations (Dave Rempis, Paulina Owczarek, Jean-Luc Guionnet, …).
